Toyota All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

Ā

What is the difference between AWD and 4WD?

There are many options available for vehicles on sale these days. You may be able to choose between AWD or 4WD, depending on the model. These may seem like the same thing, but they have different setups. It can be difficult to know the differences, but let's talk about each system so you can make an educated decision about which vehicle you want.

What is All-Wheel Drive, and How Does It Work?

An all-wheel drive is when the powertrain powers both the front and back wheels. A full-time AWD option moves all four wheels continuously. Part-time systems use their two-wheel-drive mode most of the time, but they can switch to AWD when needed for traction.

AWD functions automatically without the driver having to activate the system. However, there are a few models that offer more control options. A set of differentials, couplings, and clutches will give torque to all wheels.

What is Four-Wheel Drive, and How Do You Define It?

You'll find the four-wheel drive in larger vehicles, such as trucks and SUVs. This system uses a combination of transfer cases and couplings to transmit power to all four wheels.

4WD will transmit torque to all wheels of your vehicle as required. It can also be used in full-time or part-time mode, just like AWD. When driving, you can choose between high and low ranges. You can set this up using an electronic switch or lever. Low settings will give you the best traction, while high settings are better for slightly slippery roads, like gravel, snow, or sand.
