What's New for the 2019 Toyota Highlander?

In 2019, you might notice that the Toyota Highlander seems even bigger than before. And that's true! While other car makers have made their SUVs lighter, smaller, and equipped with fewer amenities, Toyota has taken the reverse approach.

Over the years, the Highlander has increased in size to the point that it has moved from the "mid-size" SUV class to the "large" SUV class. Depending on the trim level you get, you can fit either seven or eight passengers in your Highlander. In 2019, no matter how many people you're transporting, there is more technology and more safety features than ever to make sure every ride is as safe and comfortable as possible.

How Has the Highlander Lineup Changed for 2019?

The base model of the Highlander in 2019 is called the LE. This trim features a number of standard amenities. The first thing to note is that this trim level seats up to eight occupants. It has split-folding seats in the second and third rows that maximize cargo space when needed. A total of five USB ports in the cabin, which are configured as three in the front row and two in the second row, are designed to keep everyone's electronic devices charged and ready for use when needed. Also standard in this trim is the Highlander signature Entune audio system with hands-freee compatibility. A backup camera is also standard.

Next, the LE Plus adds a tri-zone climate control and a luxurious leather-trimmed steering wheel to the list of amenities. It also has a hands-free, power-operated liftgate. The XLE builds on that list with an infotainment system that has integrated navigation. Leather-trimmed seats in the front and second rows are also standard. From this trim level up, you'll also get a tilt-slide moonroof and a multi-information display. The SE gives you leather seats in the front and back rows. It also has a sportier suspension system.

Moving down the line, the Limited features heated and ventilated seats in the front row. It also has a captain's chair-style second row, which accommodates seven passengers instead of eight. With the Hybrid LE, you'll be able to fit eight passengers in the vehicle. A standard backup camera makes reversing much easier. This model is also designed for fuel efficiency, which is especially appreciated if you tend to put miles on the car. Lastly, the Hybrid SLE has all the amenities that its predecessors offer, along with a remote start capability and a premier infotainment system with integrated navigation.

There are Several Powertrain Choices for 2019

2019 Toyota Highlander FrontThere are several choices of engines in the 2019 Toyota Highlander. The first, which is the base engine, is a four-cylinder, 2.7L engine that generates up to 185 HP. The next most powerful engine is a six-cylinder engine that produces up to 295 HP. This 3.5L engine is standard on the LE Plus and up. The hybrid models are powered by a 3.5L engine that produces up to 306 HP. This engine has a special fuel-saving mechanism that allows the Highlander to conserve energy when the engine doesn't need to work as hard. The base engines and the hybrid are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the engine powering the XLE is matched to an eight-speed transmission.
