There are many odors associated with problems in a vehicle. You can normally get a sense of where the problem is coming from and what the issue might be by paying attention to the smell that you're noticing. To help you better understand what issue your car may be facing, here are some frequent causes of bad smells and what to do about them.

Burned Rubber

Several underlying issues may cause the distinct smell of burning rubber. It can signal a problem with the brakes, especially if the brake pads are worn out. When the brake pads wear out, the metal parts can grind together and produce heat, ultimately generating a burning smell. This smell can also be caused by oil leaking out onto the exhaust pipe, most noticeable when the car is running.

Gym Clothes

The unpleasant smell of gym clothes is another scent that you might notice when something isn't right. In this case, the scent is likely coming from inside the cabin. It may be a sign that excessive levels of moisture have accumulated in the air conditioning system. Letting the system dry out by turning on the fan to circulate fresh air can eliminate the musty smell from your vehicle.

Burned Carpet

Like burning rubber, a burning carpet smell can indicate a problem with the brakes. This smell can also be traced back to worn components. The brake pads may also start to smell like burning carpet when they wear out. Using the brakes when driving down steep hills can also cause the smell.

Syrup

While not entirely unpleasant, a syrupy smell can signal a more significant problem: leaking coolant fluid. The coolant fluid protects the engine, which means a leak should be corrected as soon as possible. Coolant fluid may leak from several places, including the radiator or a cylinder head.

Sulfur or Rotten Eggs

A foul sulfur smell can be a sign that your car's catalytic converter is not functioning correctly. It can also indicate a problem with the engine. Either way, this smell is a clue that it's time to see a mechanic.

Federal EV Tax Credit
Right now, federal tax credits can reduce the cost of buying an electric Toyota. The Clean Vehicle Credit provides up to $7,500 toward eligible vehicles. There’s also a credit for installing a home EV charger—but both programs are ending soon. The charger credit expires after June 30, 2026, and the EV tax credit is set to end on September 30, 2025, unless extended. If you're thinking about going electric, don’t wait.
