Which Toyota Models are AWD?

2018 Toyota RAV4 AWD

Toyota all-wheel drive is an asset even in good weather. There are five models with one of two versions of Toyota all-wheel drive. You may be surprised which vehicles have it.

Traditional SUVs and Crossovers

Naturally, the Toyota family SUV offers all-wheel drive. This vehicle serves big families, offering a three-row ride with car-like drivability. Likewise, Toyota offers the system on the popular RAV4. This five-person crossover can go more places with all-wheel drive to handle difficult weather challenges. Both of these vehicles have Dynamic Torque-Control All-wheel Drive. Ground clearance rises to 6.5 inches with on the RAV4 Adventure with AWD. It is eight inches on the Highlander AWD.

Dynamic Torque-Control All-Wheel Drive

The DTC-AWD system is designed to mimic four-wheel drive when it is needed. As such, it continuously monitors the engine power that is sent to the front and rear wheels. When traction is at its trickiest, the system can even power out between the two axles, achieving with electronics what was once a mechanical operation. This moves power to the wheels with grip and helps the driver maintain a safe trajectory.

The RAV4 Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid use a standard AWD-I system. This means you can get better fuel economy with all-wheel drive than you can on most SUVs today. This system is called Electronic-On-Demand AWD with intelligence (AWD-I). Boasting 194 horsepower, RAV4 hybrids earn 34 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Ground clearance is 7 or even 7.4 inches. Highlander Hybrids generate 306 horsepower, but they can claim 30 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Ground clearance is eight inches.

All-Wheel Drive with Intelligence (AWD-I)

Like DTC-AWD, the Hybrid AWD-I monitors and regulates torque between the front and rear wheels. The operation is different than the non-hybrid SUVs, however. That’s because it uses special hybrid motors to make the torque move to the rear wheels when it is needed. The Toyota hybrid SUV driver can feel more sure-footed with AWD-I at work behind the scenes.

Among minivans today, the 2018 Toyota Sienna is the only one to offer all-wheel drive. The automaker makes it available on the LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Limited, and Limited Premium editions. With so many choices, minivan shoppers can get the features they want and the all-wheel drive they need. Like the gas-powered RAV4 and Highlander, the Sienna has Dynamic Torque All-Wheel Drive. AWD boosts ground clearance to 6.6 inches.

Other Potential Picks

Of course, both the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra offer traditional 4x4 capability. Available on the Sequoia SUV and 4Runner, a multi-mode, full-time four-wheel drive system with a Torsen limited-slip center differential is standard on the Toyota Land Cruiser. Off-road features include five-speed Crawl Control and multi-terrain select. A Land Cruiser has 8.9 inches of ground clearance while the Sequoia and 4Runner offer more than nine inches of clearance. 4Runners also offer a part-time four-wheel drive system with active traction control.
